Albers' Assembly appropriates Josef Albers' Structural Constellation series and overlays it with charts, diagrams, stamps, and archival materials connected to the First Republic of Vietnam. Many of these materials were brought to the United States in the 1950s as part of efforts to communicate the political vision of a newly established state seeking to articulate an ideological position of its own. Developed during the same period, Albers' geometric studies and these political diagrams come together as two attempts to construct order. Their encounter draws out the unstable relations between abstraction, ideology, and the desire of a new Third World nation to imagine its own political form.
